I’m not gonna lie, I am really looking forward to the weekend ahead. I’ve packed about as much as one person could into a short three day span and I’m excited to experience all that’s on the schedule.
I was supposed to be in New Jersey three weeks ago speaking at the MS Society NJ-Chapter Women on the Move Luncheon. Due to high winds (ie. Hurricane Sandy) the Chapter moved the Luncheon date to November 30th. My speaking sponsor, Acorda Theraputics, emailed me to see if I would still be available to fly in to speak on this date and the first thing I thought to myself was, “Damn“. On my calendar that date/weekend was significantly marked as the championship weekend and final event of The North Face Endurance Challenge Series in San Francisco. I already had my entry. I already committed to running the whole series and this was the last weekend of a 6-month long commitment to running 50-mile and half-marathon races back-to-back all over the country.
Could I really fly from WI to NJ to speak on Friday for the MS cause, hop on a plane for 9-hours, arrive in San Francisco at 10pm, and be ready to run 50-miles Saturday morning at 5am?
Hehehe…we’ll see. At a minimum I figure that even if flights do get delayed for some reason I could still be in San Francisco by the AM and make it to the start line, even if I had to go from terminal to trail, to complete the 50-mile distance. In that scenario I may not have my best race, but at least I would have completed my goal of running all six The North Face events the year. Best case scenario is that flights are on time and I’m in SF with enough time to get a few hours of shut-eye so that I’m rested for the race.
Either way I came to the conclusion that it was important for me to be in New Jersey to speak at the Luncheon. This event is the one event that Acorda can be at to interview me and video tape me speaking, which is important to both them and myself to help promote their dedication to MS education. Over the past few years since I completed my run across America they have been more than supportive of MS Run the US, Inc. and our mission, along with their belief in my dedication to the cause.
The location is also significant because the MS Run the US – 2013 Relay will be coming directly through New Jersey on our way to New York next year in September. What better way to excite the east coast about our grand finale finish then to tell the story of my mom, how MS Run the US got started, and where we are going (literally & figuratively) with the Relay and the years ahead?
I’ll be the first to admit that I may be ready for some down time after this weekend is over, but I feel there’s no better way to spend my days then to pack them full of the things I love doing things for the people I love.
After all, as Helen Keller said, “Life is either a great adventure or nothing.”
